Channel Architects
The Channel Architects have a dotted line reporting relationship to the Chief Architect. Within GTS there are two profiles of channel architects – Process focused and Technical. Their functions are very similar to those of the Core Architects listed in the section before. Most channel architects in GTS perform the architecture function on a part-time basis, whereas only a few have architecture as their full time responsibility.
Channel Architects – Technical Activities
Channel architects have direct responsibility for architecture design and subsequent development adherence for all assigned programs within their SMT area. They are expected to demonstrate expertise in at least one engineering or process domain.
Functions
Review/create and approve the program’s technical design.
Assist in the development of an application’s data model.
Review a project’s impact on the application’s technology stack.
Determine/raise critical technical issues to Chief Architect.
Understand the technical aspects of the infrastructure environment (host consolidation, improving performance of existing applications, identifying system bottlenecks, improving testing mechanisms for their applications, etc).
Review, select and submit for approval new tools to be included in the application technology stack.
Identify enhancements to the architecture framework.
Inform the Chief Architect when they feel that a project is not adhering to standards or guidelines.
Channel Architects – Organizational Activities
Channel Architects generally have direct reporting relationships to either an SMT, an application group manager, or an application manager. In their respective capacities, they are expected to perform a number of tasks that serve both their immediate reporting sphere as well as the overall architecture organization.
Provide input to the regional Technology Roadmap.
Participate in Local and Global Peer Reviews.
Monitor SMT area compliance with ICG architecture development policies and standards.
Participate in architectural working groups where applicable.
Raise any unresolved process issues with the Chief Architect.
Channel Architects – Application Activities
Channel Architects have direct responsibility for some or all technology decisions relating to their assigned applications. They are responsible to maintain compliance with GTS standards for the technology stack, for system design and for monitoring development adherence to design. They may own these responsibilities completely for a given application, or share them with a team of architects serving an SMT area.
Functions
Review, create, assess and plan for the architecture in addition to other considerations such as performance, fault tolerance, security, etc.
Ensure that the application has deployment, systems, technical and information architecture documents in the PTS-W repository.
Review and ensure the application technology stack reflects the production state.
Proactively evolve an application’s technology stack in alignment with GTS technical standards set by the Chief Architect.
Proactively review TRAMS reports queries/data for issues.
Ensure compliance with policy and standards for application technology stack end of life (EOL), risk assessment (RA) and corrective action plan (CAP) governance for assigned applications.
Ensure that any remediation and risk management plans are aligned with the strategic technology direction for the lines of business that the Chief Architect supports.
Review application updates during the annual CSI data quality review.
Resolve any compliance issues directly or through appropriate party who is accountable.
As part of the annual budget process, assist the Application Manager in establishing and annual review of a risk management plan for any end-of-life artifact, and assists them in establishing such plans if they do not exist.
Raise any issues or concerns that should be attended to by the Chief Architect.
Channel Architects – Program Activities
Channel Architects are responsible for ensuring programs adhere to standard architecture development practice. They schedule and chair Local and Global Peer Reviews for their programs. Typically, Architects will be assigned to all full development projects where they are responsible for the associated application.
Functions
Review, create, assess and plan for the architecture in addition to other considerations such as performance, fault tolerance, security, etc.
Ensure a consistent design methodology for assigned programs.
Lead the development of the technical roadmap for any assigned applications.
Ensure that the Architecture process is followed for development projects in which the Architect is assigned.
Execute architecture Peer Reviews for any assigned programs.
